YOUR CA DIPLOMA - DID YOU KNOW . . . ?

In May 1986, ICANS’ Council approved the issuing of two documents upon obtaining the CA designation:

  • The Diploma of Accountancy, which is a large, white document that states that the final CA exams have been passed. This document is given at the Convocation ceremony and remains with the CA forever.
  • The Certificate of Membership, which is given to all CAs once they completed all requirements and are admitted to membership of ICANS. This certificate remains the property of the Institute per By-law Sect. 3(2), which states that:
    • Every member shall be entitled to receive a certificate of membership, which shall be in such form as the Council may, from time to time, determine and, subject to the terms of these by-laws, to hold the certificate as long as he or she remains a member.
    • Such certificate shall remain the property of the Institute and in the event of termination or suspension of membership for any reason other than death, shall be returned to the Institute.

Prior to 1986, members received only one document (their diploma), which stated that the document was the property of ICANS, as per the By-law Sect 3.

So, if you graduated prior to 1986 and perhaps you are uncertain about resigning, because you are worried about giving up your original diploma, you should note that, for a nominal fee, you can order a new diploma, which is very similar to your current document. The wording and signatures are the only things that will change; the new wording states that you have passed the final examinations (no reference to membership with ICANS is made) and the signatures will be those of the current President and Secretary. If you later decide to rejoin ICANS membership, you will be provided with a new Membership Certificate that states you are a member.
