The following non-profit organizations have contacted ICANS looking for a volunteer CA. Most of these organizations are looking for Treasurers to sit on their board. Students are also welcome to volunteer for most of these positions. Volunteer Treasurer
Halifax, NS

The Progress Center for Early Intervention Development is a Halifax based non-profit resource and community outreach program for infants and young children with developmental delays.  The Progress Center requires a volunteer Treasurer. The Treasurer is responsible for:

  • Attending monthly management committee meetings and bi-monthly Board meetings;
  • Presenting the financial results to the management committee and the Board of Directors;
  • overseeing financial results (budget to actual), including monitoring the part-time bookkeeper;
  • providing prudent and practical financial management advice to the Center’s management; and
  • overseeing the preparation of the annual budget, government reporting and annual audit procedures.

An ideal candidate has completed a professional accounting designation (CA/CMA/CGA) with a minimum 5 years relevant accounting and finance experience. You are a confident, strategic thinker committed to making a difference in your community and for others.

Volunteer Accountant
Halifax, NS

Nova Scotia Nature Trust

Duties include the following:

Monthly

1. Review Bank Account/Cash Balance for proper cash management

a) Confirmation of funds and cash flow requirements;
b) Investment of surplus funds; and
c) Notice to ED/Treasurer re excess funds in endowment bank

2. Investments

a) Review investment reports (Excel worksheets)
    i) Update as necessary
    ii) Advise ED/treasurer of maturities and other matters of note

b) Review Brokers statements
   
i) Record entries in books of account
    ii) Reconcile brokerage account statements to G/L accounts    (Excel worksheets) –cash balance and investments and income

3. Land

a) Review for change in month (Inquiry of ED)
    i) Additions
    ii) Disposals
    iii) Ensure transactions properly recorded

4. Policy and Procedures

a) Review books to ensure accuracy, particularly reviewing in detail any complex  journal entries (such a loans, unusual gifts etc.)
b) Review internal controls and make recommendations for improvements/modifications as needed
c) Update policy/procedures manual with any new entries/modifications and ensure book-keeper is up-to-date
d) Support book-keeper with questions/queries about entries.

Quarterly

1. Investments
a) Update committee reports and provide to ED/treasurer

2. Fixed Assets
a) Review for changes in quarter
b) Update fixed asset worksheet (including depreciation schedule)
c) Record depreciation expense

3. Financial reports to Board

Annually

1. Prepare audit package and assist with audit;
2. Oversee preparation of charitable return;
3. Prepare annual budget with ED and treasurer; and
4. Complete US tax return if required (verify if/when required).

Volunteer Treasurer
South Shore, NS

The South Shore Minor Hockey Association is currently seeking a member with a financial background to serve as Treasurer.  If you are interested, please contact Spencer Westhaver, President at scwesthaver@eastlink.ca.

The Treasurer is responsible for reviewing and presenting the financial statements at board meetings.  In conjunction with the Board and the President, the Treasurer is responsible for paying the bills for the Association and dealing with financial issues which arise from time to time.

Experience would be an asset.  This is an excellent opportunity to sharpen your communication, teamwork and financial skills all in one volunteer position with an important organization.
