2009 CA of the Year Award

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia (ICANS) is proud to announce that

Jane A. Roy, FCA

is the recipient of its . . .

2009 Ross L. Towler CA of the Year Award

Named after Ross L. Towler, FCA, upon his retirement in 1997, after 28 years of service as the Institute’s Executive Director, this coveted award is presented annually to a CA who embodies the spirit of community volunteerism. And, while volunteerism is a proud and renowned characteristic of our Nova Scotia culture, what might be less well known is the how many CAs graciously donate their time and expertise to making a difference in communities throughout the province and beyond.

“As tradition holds, the CA of the Year Award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the dedication of Nova Scotia CAs working tirelessly for good causes in their communities,” explains ICANS CEO and Executive Director, Michele Wood-Tweel, FCA,. “With their superior financial expertise, strategic thinking and business insight, CAs are natural leaders, especially when it comes to volunteering and community development. And, as this year’s recipient, Jane clearly personifies this symbol of volunteerism and leadership.”

In particular, ICANS would like to recognize Jane’s volunteer leadership in creating Catapult — a one week youth leadership camp that targets teenagers from across Nova Scotia who teachers believe to have exceptional leadership potential, but due to circumstances, may not be able to experience such an opportunity. From fundraising to recruiting inspirational speakers and experts from around the world to donate their time to the Camp, Jane oversaw all the logical elements in making this unique and special camp a reality. As one participant remarked: “I’m going home with courage and confidence that I didn't have before; sometimes there’s a wall in the way, but all you have to do is making a door.”

That said, ICANS’ Honours Committee also considered the cumulative actions of Jane’s volunteer contributions that have enriched and benefitted not only the local community, but Atlantic Canada. Specifically, Jane is known and respected for her leadership regarding the Maritime Medical Care Challenge (war canoe race) that helped to raise over $1 million for the IWK Health Centre and her roles as the Founding Chair of the Provincial Autism Centre and Founding Vice-Chair of the annual Autism Golf Ball.

Clearly, Jane is very deserving of a CA of the Year Award. Her volunteer philosophy and commitment are outstanding and she is an exemplary example of how our members continue to make volunteering an integral part of their lives.
