History of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia The Institute is a self-governing association formed by Chartered Accountants in Nova Scotia. The Chartered Accountant (CA) designation is a professional title and is granted with an understanding and a commitment to adhere to the highest professional standards. The Chartered Accountants Act of the Province of Nova Scotia grants the Institute the authority to govern the activities of its members. The Institute fulfills two primary mandates:
On January 12, 1900, Samuel Scott, Michael Brown, Robert MacIntyre, William Leverman, Edward Longard, William Bishop, George Faulkner, Sims Lee, John Cameron, and Thomas Johns signed a memorandum of association and constitution, declaring themselves and such persons as should become associated with them, an association under the name of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia. On March 30, 1900, they were successful in obtaining a Charter from the Nova Scotia Legislature, which granted the members the right to use the designation of "Chartered Accountant". This small but determined group has steadily grown and the Institute membership has reached more than 1500 members and more than 150 students. The CA profession is highly recognized in Nova Scotia for high standards of competence, integrity and service. Members dominate public accounting and hold senior leadership positions in education, government and industry. The mission of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia is to protect and serve the public and our members by providing exceptional services and resources within a well-regulated profession. Accomplishing this mission will enable Chartered Accountants in Nova Scotia to be the obvious choice for financial management, assurance and other specialized services. Nova Scotia's Chartered Accountants will continue to take pride in the CA designation and will value their membership in the Institute as one of the most important and relevant assets in achieving their personal career objectives. In all dealings with the public and its members, the Institute will demonstrate the following values, which are core to the profession:
